Europe 2007 - London Redux

London Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge from the Hendrik

Ah, the end of the journey - or nearly so. We arrived in London from Edinburgh, and were instructed to meet Melissa and James at their new1 home on the Thames for dinner. Hendrik, a former hotel ship in the Netherlands, has found its new home just east of London's Tower Bridge, and Melissa and James are chronicling the renovations in their blog. It's a labor of love, with plenty to keep them busy for a long time to come.

Which means there'll be plenty to read about for a long time, too.

There isn't much to say about the tail end of our trip. Melissa made us a nice, simple meal - adzuki bean and squash stew with fresh bread, with bowls of fresh fruit for dessert - to enjoy in the battery-powered ambience of Hendrik's dining room. Afterwards, we climbed up to the deck for some lovely views of the bridge that you just can't get elsewhere. Oh, if only I'd had a tripod.

Since the boat wasn't 100% livable at that point, we spent our last two nights with Sue, another friend of mine from college. She made us all dinner - salmon en croute, which was a level of fanct she hadn't attempted before, though it came out quite well - and Sharon and I2 made chocolate chip cookies, which were a real hit. They always are.

When will we make it back? Hard to say. It's still a lovely feeling to be home - and not splitting my time between home and Chicago. So, we'll just have to see.

1Well, sort of. It's new to them, and that's what matters.

2Mostly Sharon, of course.
